İstanbul’un en yüksek tepelerinden biri olan altıncı tepede bulunan Mihrimah Sultan Cami, 16 . yüzyıl eseridir. Kanuni Sultan Süleyman’ın kızı Mihrimah Sultan tarafından, Mimar Sinan’a inşa ettirilmiştir. Edirnekapı semtinde yer alan cami, Bizans dönemine ait Aya Yorgi Manastırı üzerine inşa edilmiştir. Bir rivayete göre de civarda Aya Georgios’a adanmış bir kilise bulunuyordu. Caminin buraya yaptırılacağı kararlaştırılınca, Kanuni Sultan Süleyman’ın emriyle aynı bölgede ahşap bir Aya Georgios Kilisesi yaptırılacaktı. Günümüzde ortaya atılan rivayetlere göre, Mimar Sinan’ın Mihrimah Sultan’a bir aşk beslediği ve bundan dolayı iki camiyi inşa ettirdiği bilinir. Kanuni’nin bir seferi sırasında Sinan’ın, Mihrimah Sultan’ı gördüğü rivayet edilir. Sultan’ın gözüne girmek için 13 gün içinde köprü inşa ettirmiş ancak yine istediği sonucu alamamıştır. Mimar Sinan aşkını sanata dökmeye karar verip, asırlarca adını yaşatacak iki yapı inşa etmiştir. Üsküdar Mihrimah Sultan Camii’nde etekleri yere değen kadın silueti olduğu söylenir. İstanbul’un altıncı ve en yüksek tepesinde yer alan Edirnekapı Mihrimah Sultan Camii’nde ise, sarkıt ve minare işlemelerinde saçları topuklarını döven bir kadın tasviri olduğu söylenir. Mihrimah Sultan’ın doğum gününde yani 21 Mart’ta ; Edirnekapı’daki caminin tek minaresi arkasından kırmızı güneş batarken, Üsküdar’daki caminin ardından ay doğmaktadır. Böylece Mihrü Mah gerçekleşmektedir. Ancak bu hikayenin hiçbir gerçekliği yoktur.
