Divrigi Grand Mosque and Hospital - Sivas

Divrigi Grand Mosque and Hospital - Sivas
The earliest settlement in and around Divrigi goes back to the Hittite Period. The area was built by Ahmet Şah and his wife Turan Melek in 1228-1229 when he was under Mengücekoğulları. This masterpiece of Islamic architecture consists of a mosque with two domed tombs and a hospital adjacent to it. In addition to their architectural features, the buildings are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List with their rich examples of Anatolian stonework. Great Mosque and Hospital of entering Turkey is the first architectural structure of this list.

Divriği Ulu Mosque, shaped by Hürremşah, the architect of Ahlatlı in 1228, is a unique work in terms of plan type and ornamental features. Darüşşifa, a two-storey building with a courtyard and an iwan, built adjacent to the mosque, has unique characteristics as a hospital where the patients can get health with the sound of water.

Ulu Mosque and Darüşşifa have a simple architectural appearance from the outside. However, each of Darüşşifa Crown Gate, Mosque North Crown Gate, Mosque Western Crown Gate and Shah Mahfili Crown Gate is a marvel of architectural and engineering wonders.

The three-dimensional, asymmetrical, floral and geometric figures on all the crown gates of the structure were enthusiastically processed in the high relief technique close to the statue with a unique description. This baroque architectural style in Divriği Ulu Mosque and Darüşşifa, where the stone is processed like a lace, is unique in Turkish and Islamic Art. As with the crown doors, each column, column base, column cap and ceiling decoration inside the dome show separate styles and decoration examples.
