Evliya Çelebi, who came to Çorum, said that the fortress of the city in the direction of Qibla was a Seljuk structure built by Sultan Kılıç Arslan. The same year the traveler W.J. Hamilton states that the square-planned fortress structure built on a hill in the southeast of the city was built by Sultan Süleyman. Smooth cut stone, rubble stone and spolia stones belonging to Roman-Byzantine periods were used as building materials. The castle is housed in a small mosque with dwellings.
