Atatürk'ün Ankara'daki Anıtkabir'i, ölümünden altı yıl sonra, 9 Ekim 1944'te temeli atılarak yapılmaya başlandı ve Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'nin kurucusu, ilk Reisicumhur Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, ölümünden on beş yıl sonra, 10 Kasım 1953'te buraya gömüldü.
Başkentin, Kale'den sonra en hakim noktası olan Rasat Tepe'de yapımı kararlaştırılan bu Anıtkabir için açılan proje yarışmasına, Türkiye'den 25, Almanya'dan 11, İtalya'dan 81 ve çeşitli ülkelerden de 49 olmak üzere toplam 166 proje katıldı. Yarışmayı Ord. Prof. Emin Onat ve Doç. Orhan Ada'nın projesi kazandı. Anıtkabir'in yerini evvela Aydın Milletvekili Mithat Aydın önerdi.
1944'te temeli atılan Anıtkabir'in yapımı dokuz yıl sürdü. İtibar holünün duvarları Bilecik mermerleriyle kaplandı. Anıt; Giriş Yolu, Zafer Alanı ve Şeref Holü dene üç ana bölümden oluşmakta.
